Sorong Gateway To The Raja Ampat Islands

This is the city which is the starting point for your visit to the park a breathtaking sea Raja Ampat. Sorong city known as Oil City since the influx of oil surveyors from the Netherlands since 1908.

Sorong city is also renowned as one of the cities with heritage attributes Heritage Nederlands Neuw Guinea Maschcapeij (NNGPM) or a city full of historical heritage of the former Dutch oil company. Productive oil fields in Sorong is one reason why the Dutch colonized New Guinea (Papua name first) even the latter is returned to Indonesia in 1962.


Sorong name comes from the word "Soren". Soren in the Biak language meaning Deep Blue Sea and Bumpy Sea. The word was first used by Soren Biak Numfor tribe ancient sailing with sailboats from one island to another until it settled in the Raja Ampat Islands. Numfor Biak tribe that gives the name of "Land Maladum" as the Soren who then pronounced by the merchants Thionghoa, clad European Missionaries, Maluku, and Sanger Talaut as the Sorong.

The islands of Raja Ampat are accessed via Sorong on the mainland. There are four main islands: Batanta, Salawati, Misool and Waigeo, but a trip to Batanta and nearby Salawati is usually enough to see all but Bruijn’s Brush-turkey.
